She is an inspiration, a role model, and a lot of fun. A true trailblazer, Ruth Manecke was never one to allow societal barriers against women to hold her back.

Ruth is a long-time resident of White Plains, where she and her daughters enjoyed many hours at our YWCA. In 1956, Ruth started an agency, now called All Creatures Great and Small, to supply professionally trained animals for television shows, movies, advertising, theater, and special events (Ruth’s office walls are covered with photos taken of her with dozens of celebrity humans, as well as with the many animals that she considered family and friends – from domestic cats to lions, gorillas and elephants. She had her own television show before becoming the animal supplier for Captain Kangaroo. Ruth created educational programming for the Bronx Zoo. We are exceptionally proud to honor these trailblazers, whose work exemplifies our YWCA’s mission of eliminating racism and empowering women.Īn Emmy Award winner for her 30-year role with the “Captain Kangaroo” show, Ruth Manecke is a zoologist, animal trainer, and businesswoman. This year’s program will demonstrate the lasting impact that supportive housing, childcare, early education, health and wellness, advocacy, and leadership can have on molding the future of women and their entire families – especially when programs are delivered with a racial equity lens. In the Company of Women is our largest and most important fundraiser each year.
